Veterinary costs in Sweden are skyrocketing, according to the Social Democrats. To stop the price trend, the party proposes that the Swedish Competition Authority be given greater powers to scrutinize the market.

According to Åsa Westlund, the party's spokesperson on climate and environmental issues, veterinary costs have increased by 70 percent in the last ten years. Two large venture capital companies have bought up a large number of Sweden's clinics and this is one reason for the large price increase, according to S.

The party proposes that the Swedish Competition Authority be given a mandate to review the entire veterinary market, and not just individual companies as the regulations are written today. Among other things, the Swedish Competition Authority should be given the authority to produce clearer comparison prices and fixed price lists for certain treatments.

Similar models to what we propose exist in Denmark and the UK, says Westlund at a press conference.

She believes that the proposal will bring more competition to the market and thus lower prices.
