Russian military planes have violated Lithuanian airspace, says the country's president Gitanas Nauseda on X. "This is a clear violation of international law and Lithuania's territorial integrity. It confirms once again the importance of strengthening European air defense readiness", he writes.

According to Lithuania's military, two Russian fighter jets were over Lithuanian airspace for 18 seconds. The news agency Reuters writes that a Spanish NATO plane stationed in the Baltic region after the incident patrolled the border to mark the violation.

Lithuania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to summon the Russian ambassador, according to the president, to protest against the "reckless and dangerous behavior".

Russia claims that the two fighter jets, of the type Su-30, were training over the Russian exclave Kaliningrad. "The planes stayed over Russian territory in strict accordance with international rules", the Ministry of Defense writes according to the state news agency Tass.

In August, Lithuania asked NATO for help in strengthening the country's air defense after a live-loaded Russian drone flew into the country via the neighboring country Belarus.

In September, several notable violations of NATO member states' airspace occurred.

Among other things, Russian drones have been detected over Poland and Romania, and on September 19, three Russian fighter jets flew through Estonian airspace for twelve minutes.
