"On November 9, we will turn off the lights in the house where we have lived for 30 years, shut down the servers and leave. The newspaper no longer exists," the editorial team writes online.
"We have been killed," editor-in-chief Sergej Sokolov says in a YouTube video.
Novaya Gazeta and several of its employees were labeled “foreign agents” earlier this year. On Thursday, it became known that the editorial staff would be forced to leave their premises in Moscow.
The newspaper was first published in 1993, and several of its employees, including journalist Anna Politkovskaya, have been murdered. Its former editor-in-chief, Dmitry Muratov, was awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.
Several employees went into exile as early as 2022 and started the newspaper Novaya Gazeta Europe.
