He is accused of "spreading lies about the Russian military" under censorship laws introduced by Moscow during its invasion of Ukraine, the AFP news agency reports. He faces up to ten years in prison.
Remeslo was long loyal to the Kremlin, but changed tack in the spring and launched an unexpected attack on President Vladimir Putin on social media.
He was then sent to a psychiatric ward in St. Petersburg, but did not stop his criticism. This week, the 42-year-old wrote on social media that Putin “will be taken away in handcuffs in the fall.”
In his notable post in March, under the headline "Five reasons why I stopped supporting Vladimir Putin," Remeslo portrayed the president as an illegitimate leader guilty of corruption, tyranny, and war crimes.
