"The enemy has carried out the largest massive attack on the gas production infrastructure since the beginning of the war. As a result of this attack, a significant part of our facilities have been damaged. Some of the damage is critical," writes Ukraine's state gas company Naftogaz in a statement.
Around 35 rockets and 60 drones were fired at gas facilities in the central and eastern parts of Ukraine.
Russia's military says it has attacked Ukraine's "military-industrial" complex with a combination of rockets and drones.
The attack comes at the same time as Ukraine is adjusting to winter climate and can be seen as a deliberate Russian strategy to hit hard at parts of the infrastructure that are supposed to keep the heat up during the cold winter months.
The International Criminal Court ICC has issued an arrest warrant against Russia's former defense minister for attacks on Ukraine's energy network, which the court believes constitutes a crime under the laws of war.
