Russia's president Vladimir Putin has signed a law which means that the country leaves the anti-torture convention that European countries have gathered around.

According to the document that Russian authorities have published, the agreement, called European convention for the prevention of torture, which strengthens the rights of those who have been deprived of their freedom or who are in prison, is rejected.

The decision in Moscow is a further indication of the Russian critical attitude towards the defense of human rights.
