According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Russian planes were on "a regular flight completely in accordance with international airspace rules and did not violate the borders of any other states, which is confirmed by objective monitoring".

Reports that Russian fighter jets of the Mig-31 model violated Estonia's airspace for 12 minutes came on Friday evening Swedish time.

Estland wants NATO member countries to be summoned in accordance with the military alliance's Article 4, which states that the defense alliance's members must consult urgently when a member country feels threatened. The action has also received sharp criticism from both the EU and NATO.

Earlier in September, a similar incident occurred when over 20 Russian drones allegedly violated Poland's airspace and were shot down by NATO planes.
