Rubio arrived in Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, on Monday and has held talks with Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir and Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir.
At a press conference, Rubio said Iceland had long served as “a critical outpost for monitoring covert activities and deterring our adversaries.”
In early September, US President Donald Trump stirred controversy by sharing an AI-generated map that appeared to show Iceland as part of the US. Iceland responded by summoning the US ambassador and branding the image “completely inappropriate.”
Gunnarsdóttir says the issue has now been resolved and that she also welcomes the US agreement with Greenland.
