The initiative "Stop killing games" started after the gaming giant Ubisoft shut down the online functions for the game "The crew" in 2023. Ubisoft also removed the game from the players' libraries, despite them having purchased it. Several other games have since met the same fate, which has upset many.
"Stop killing games" wants games to function even after the official servers have been shut down and now the name collection is close to its goal of 1.4 million signatures - which has made the EU Parliament have to look at the issue.
One of the signatures comes from Nicolae Stefanuta, who is one of 14 vice presidents in the EU Parliament. He writes in a post on Instagram that "a game, when sold, belongs to the buyer and not the game company".
The counterargument from an industry organization is that games will become more expensive if these measures are not taken.
