One of the new government's tasks will be to set a date for a new presidential election. The previous election was annulled by the Supreme Court following suspicions of Russian interference.

"It will not be easy for the future government. We are aware that we are in the midst of a deep political crisis. It is also a crisis of confidence, and this coalition aims to regain the citizens' confidence" said Ciolacu in a statement on Monday.

Ciolacu has been Prime Minister since June last year.

I wish him great success with the new pro-European coalition, said President Iohannis on Monday.

The Social Democratic Party PSD is expected to receive eight ministerial posts in the new government, the liberal center party PNL, six, while the ethnic Hungarian party UDMR is expected to receive two.

Klaus Iohannis is expected to remain President until the new election has been decided.
