Several Killed in Attack on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, Sources Say

Several people were killed in Saturday’s attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, according to sources quoted by The New York Times and AFP.

According to The New York Times, which spoke to three people with knowledge of the incident, at least 12 people were killed and another 50 injured.

AFP has spoken to a medical source who says that at least two people were killed, a figure confirmed by another source. AFP previously reported that doctors were called to hospitals in several parts of the city shortly after the incident because of “a serious emergency.”

The first reports of the attack came on Saturday afternoon local time in Sweden. In the early evening, the Saudi aviation authority confirmed that traffic to and from King Khalid had been stopped and that several people had been injured, although it was unclear how many.

The US embassy in Saudi Arabia says it is "aware of attacks" on the airport and urged American citizens in a statement to stay away from the area.

Similar calls have also been heard from the embassies of several other Western countries, including Spain, Germany and Canada.

King Khalid has been targeted repeatedly over the past week, most recently on Thursday, when three Saudis were killed in one of the attacks.

The Iran-backed Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for the previous attacks but has not yet commented on Saturday's events.
