The decision was made at the request of C and MP.

A minority of at least one-sixth of the members can decide to suspend laws that restrict freedoms and rights for a year. This rarely happens. The possibility was used in 2007 for the Signals Intelligence Act and in 2011 for the Data Retention Act.

The legal amendment that now has to wait a year for a decision is part of a bill that aims to allow foreigners with deportation orders to be detained or placed under supervision in more cases than today and to be held in detention for longer periods if there is a risk that they will go underground.

The part that is suspended means, among other things, that children who have sought asylum may be held in migration detention for a maximum of twelve days, compared to today's six.
