The cultural committee's proposal on the design of the public service mission and the economic conditions for public service companies during the period 2026–2033 was also approved on Wednesday in the Riksdag.
Instead of an annual increase of 2 percent as today, the three Swedish public service companies SVT, Sveriges Radio and Utbildningsradion will receive a 3 percent increase in appropriations in 2026, then a 2 percent annual increase in 2027–2030 and 1 percent in 2031–2033.
The opposition has believed that larger increases were needed, but according to Minister of Culture Parisa Liljestrand (The Moderate Party) it is still an increase.
Totally, this will mean that the public service companies will receive almost 83 billion kronor over eight years, and that is something more than what they would have received if they had kept the current model, she said when the government presented its proposal for the new law in May.
The Riksdag parties are also tightening the conditions for how SVT and SR may use text in news operations. Commercial media have directed criticism at the fact that the companies publish too much text on their websites, which competes with traditional newspapers.
The law on public service and the amendments to the radio and television law are proposed to come into force on December 2 and the other legislative changes on January 1 next year.
