A South African research team at an isolated facility on Antarctica has appealed to authorities for help after a colleague threatened to kill another.

A distress call has been sent from the isolated research station Sanae IV.

In the email, which the South African newspaper Sunday Times has taken part of, concern is expressed for one of the nine researchers, doctors, and engineers living together there.

The man is accused of physically attacking the leader of the research team and uttering death threats.

"His behavior has escalated to a level that is very uncomfortable", the colleague writes and continues:

"I am still deeply worried about my own safety, constantly wondering if I might become the next victim."

The research team is more or less isolated due to the unpredictable weather conditions prevailing at the site. The next scheduled visit by a supply ship will not take place until December, and the team is expected to continue working at the base for another 13 months.

On Monday, South African authorities commented on the reports. No one will be evacuated from the station, it was announced.

However, the accused man has agreed to voluntarily participate in a psychological evaluation. He has shown remorse and is cooperative, according to the South African environmental department, which oversees the researchers.

Officials and advisors have intervened remotely to "mediate and restore relationships at the base", the department states.
