US President Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind Republicans across the country campaigning for new constituencies that benefit their party, but he is facing resistance in the state of Indiana, a strong Republican stronghold.

In a vote in the state Senate, where Republicans hold a majority of 40 out of 50 seats, a clear majority voted down a new electoral map on Thursday.

The federal government should not dictate what happens in our states, by threat or other means, says Republican Senator Spencer Deery.

The game of how the US's local electoral districts should look is called "gerrymandering." Parties want to adjust the maps based on demographics to favor individual candidates.

In the 2026 midterm elections, the results in individual districts could determine the balance of power at the national level. Republicans currently have a narrow majority in the House of Representatives in Washington, DC.
