In a joint statement on Saturday, the Republican leaders of the defense committees in the House of Representatives and the Senate, Roger Wicker and Mike Rogers, warned that the move could "send the wrong signal to Vladimir Putin."
Even if European allies increase defense spending, "it will take time to translate that investment into the military capabilities required to take primary responsibility for conventional deterrence," they said.
They also noted that Germany has gone along with Trump by investing more in defense, and that it has allowed the United States to use German bases in the war against Iran.
The announcement to move soldiers from Germany came after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized the U.S. war on Iran.
