Jamaican reggae singer and actor's wife Latifa Chambers writes on Instagram:
"It is with deep sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away following a stroke followed by pneumonia. I am grateful to his family, friends, colleagues and artists who have shared his journey."
Cliff broke into the ska scene as a teenager with the songs “Hurricane Hatti” and “Miss Jamaica.” He made his album debut in 1968 and over time scored world-famous songs like “You can get it if you really want,” “Many rivers to cross,” and “Wonderful world, beautiful people.”
He also made famous covers of, among others, Cat Stevens' "Wild World" and Johnny Nash's "I can see clearly now".
In the 1970s, he also starred in the crime drama "The Harder They Come" (1972). The film, for which Cliff also contributed a number of songs to the soundtrack, helped to introduce reggae to the world.
Cliff was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
