The Ipswich player Sam Morsy was the only one of the Premier League's 20 team captains who refused to wear a rainbow armband when the LGBTQI movement was highlighted over the weekend. Now the club explains why – it was due to Morsy's religious beliefs.

"We proudly support Premier League's rainbow campaign and stand together with the LGBTQI movement for equality and acceptance", the club writes in a statement according to several British media outlets.

"At the same time, we respect the decision made by our team captain Sam Morsy, who has chosen not to wear the rainbow armband due to his religious beliefs", Ipswich continues.

Egyptian Morsy is a practicing Muslim and it was in the 0–1 loss away against Nottingham that he wore a regular captain's armband.

Tuesday's home match against Crystal Palace is also part of Premier League's rainbow campaign.
