During the congress back home in Cairo, Moustafa had opposing candidates in the presidential election for the first time since 2009, but those eligible to vote chose Tjark de Lange (the Netherlands), Franjo Bobinac (Slovenia), and Gerd Butzeck (Germany).
Moustafa received 129 votes out of 179 possible, according to the Ritzau news agency.
Several "ghost unions"
"I promise that I will work day and night for sport in every corner of the world," he said when the vote was over.
The 81-year-old has been in office since 2000 and if he serves out his term, he will have been chairman of the federation for 29 years.
There has been speculation about corruption during the Egyptian's time as head of the federation. For example, he has been criticized for receiving lucrative fees from parties that bought television rights to the World Cup and there has also been talk of corruption in connection with the awarding of the championships.
There are a total of 211 member associations, 18 more than there are member states in the UN. Around a third of the associations have become members of the IHF during Moustafa's time in office, writes Ritzau.
Half have no national team
However, a review by the Danish newspaper Politiken shows that several of them can be described as a form of “ghost unions”.
According to the newspaper, 62 percent of IHF member associations do not have their own website, 57 percent do not have a valid contact address, just over half do not have a domestic league, and 47 percent lack an official national team.
In recent years, Hassan Moustafa has also shown clear signs of old age and failing memory in public appearances, but now another four years await him as the most powerful man in the handball world.
