The Swedish Maritime Administration carried out a total of 1,012 sea rescue operations last year, which is at roughly the same level as in 2023.
The most operations, 275, were carried out in Västra Götaland County last year, while 258 operations were carried out in Stockholm County.
In Skåne, the number of operations increased from 117 cases in 2023 to 128 cases last year.
The most common cause of sea rescue operations was engine or propeller failure, followed by grounding. Pleasure boats accounted for the vast majority of operations.
According to a press release from the Swedish Maritime Administration, a more stable trend in the number of cases is now visible after the increase during the pandemic, when more people vacationed in Sweden.
As for the number of air rescue operations, they increased by 16 percent compared to 2023. In total, 701 air rescue operations were carried out in 2024.
The reason for the increase is not that the number of accidents is increasing, but rather that pilots forget to report that they have landed, which triggers a warning alarm.
The number of helicopter operations also increased slightly last year. The majority of the 472 helicopter operations consisted of search and rescue operations within sea rescue.
