At least two people have drowned in flooded basements in New York City, as record-breaking rain is reported from parts of the US city, leaving streets and subway stations under water.

In Central Park in Manhattan, over 45 millimeters of rain were measured on Thursday, exceeding the old record from 1917, reports ABC News, citing the country's weather authority.

La Guardia Airport also saw record rainfall, with 50 millimeters (2 inches) falling. Over 1,000 flights from the area were reported to have been canceled.

One of the deceased was recovered by divers from a basement in a three-story townhouse in Brooklyn. The other was found in the basement of an apartment building in Manhattan, police said.

Flood warnings have been issued for the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, according to media reports, with streets and subways in some places reported to be flooded.
