The number of applications for impediment assessments has steadily risen in recent months. In March, the authority received over 6,000 applications for impediment assessments, which is the highest figure since 2022.

"We can see that this could be a record year for the number of impediment assessments. More than before have made impediment assessments during January, February, and March this year, says Vjera Catovic, operational developer at the Tax Authority in the press release.

Currently, the processing time is around two weeks, but the Tax Authority urges those who are getting married this summer to apply for an impediment assessment now.

Impediment assessment means that the Tax Authority examines whether two people can marry each other. Impediments can, for example, be if someone is under 18 years old, is closely related, or if one of the persons is already married.

Before the wedding, all couples must apply for an impediment assessment by filling in a special form and submitting it to the Tax Authority.

According to Swedish law, the following impediments exist to getting married:

Age – if someone in the couple is under 18 years old.

Kinship – if the couple is closely related.

It is also an impediment if someone in the couple is already married or registered partner.

In certain situations, the right to enter into marriage shall be examined according to foreign law.

Once the assessment is complete, you receive a certificate of impediment assessment and a form with a marriage certificate that the officiant shall fill in. The impediment assessment is valid for four months, and the validity period cannot be extended. If the time has expired, a new application must be submitted.
