Last year, just over 6,500 traffic accidents involving fallow deer were reported in the country. This represents an increase of almost 50 percent over five years.

Accidents involving fallow deer are increasing steadily year by year. Last year there were 6,537, the highest level ever measured, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency said in a press release.

The increase since 2020, when 4,592 fallow deer accidents were reported, is 42 percent.

A total of 73,296 accidents involving ungulates were reported last year. Wild boar accidents are also at a record high, 9,421 - an increase of 30 percent since 2020.

Deer continue to account for the largest number of ungulate accidents, 50,638 last year.

To reduce accidents, hunters, landowners and authorities need to work together, according to the agency.

"The hunting corps does important work, both through hunting and through searching," said game warden Anders Broby in the press release.
