The tough economic situation of recent years is expected to dissipate. But among restaurateurs, difficult times are still ahead. The recovery appears to be delayed, according to the industry organization Visita.
Last year, a total of 943 restaurant companies went bankrupt – compared to 672 bankruptcies when the pandemic struck in 2020.
According to Visita's forecast, the growth for the industry will be zero percent in 2025.
"We are looking forward to a cautious recovery later in 2025, but it is clear that Swedish restaurants still face major challenges," says Visita's chief economist Thomas Jakobsson.
According to Visita, many in the industry are struggling with significant cost increases, including higher rents and raw material prices, as well as tax debts from the pandemic years that need to be paid.
"It is of the utmost importance that the government introduces better and more individually tailored repayment plans for the debts, otherwise jobs and companies risk disappearing," adds Jakobsson.
