The organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is at the forefront of the coalition of armed groups that have recently taken over large areas of Syria at a rapid pace.
In the interview, which is Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani's first in several years, he talks about creating a government based on institutions and a "council elected by the people".
Syria deserves a governing system that is institutional, not one where a single ruler makes arbitrary decisions, he says.
The ultimate goal of the coalition, according to analysts, is to establish an Islamic state based on sharia, just like other similar groups.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is only part of this dialogue and can be dissolved at any time. It is not an end in itself, but a means to perform a task: to confront the regime, says al-Jawlani.
