The reigning champions Real Madrid are still the big brothers in the Spanish capital, after advancing to the quarterfinals after a penalty shootout.
Antonio Rüdiger scored the decisive penalty that secured the win for Real.
But what happened earlier in the penalty shootout will be discussed afterwards. Julían Álvarez slipped when he took Atlético's second penalty, but it went in. However, it was disallowed, as he was deemed to have kicked the ball with his supporting foot and into the goal.
Lucas Vázquez then missed a penalty for Real, but so did Marcos Llorente for Atlético, who have never won the Champions League.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, have won the European Cup/Champions League 15 times – more than any other club – and will now face Arsenal in the quarterfinals.
Real had a 2–1 lead from last week's meeting at home on Santiago Bernabéu, but that advantage did not last long in the return match.
As early as 27 seconds into the game, Conor Gallagher scored the opening goal in front of the home crowd. Real Madrid had an excellent opportunity to equalize in the 70th minute, but Vinicius Júnior sent his penalty high up into the stands.
There were no more goals in extra time – and therefore the penalty shootout decided the winner.
Earlier in the evening, Dortmund secured their quarterfinal spot with a 2–1 win away against Lille. The Germans advanced with a 3–2 aggregate score and will face Barcelona in the quarterfinals.
Aston Villa thrashed Club Brygge 3–0 (6–1 aggregate) and will face Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals.
Arsenal had practically secured their advancement already with the big away win, 7–1 against PSV Eindhoven. The return match in London ended 2–2 and Arsenal will therefore face Real Madrid next.
In the fourth quarterfinal, Bayern München will meet Inter.
Arsenal–Madrid
Paris Saint-Germain–Aston Villa
Barcelona–Borussia Dortmund
Bayern München–Inter
The first matches will be played on April 8–9 and the return matches on April 15–16.
