The Spanish giant club writes in an open letter, sent to the Spanish Football Association (RFEF) and the Spanish Sports Council (CSD), that the referee decisions against Real Madrid have reached a level of manipulation that can no longer be ignored.
The letter is written in the aftermath of Real Madrid's 0-1 loss away to Espanyol last weekend. Real Madrid believes that Espanyol's goal scorer Carlos Romero should have been sent off earlier in the match for a tackle on Kylian Mbappé. Furthermore, Real Madrid thinks that a goal by Vinicius Júnior in the first half was incorrectly disallowed.
The refereeing performance in the match was "scandalous" and the refereeing system in the country is "thoroughly corrupt", according to Real Madrid.
"The scandal in that match has once again gained global attention, where the international press is questioning the biased use of VAR in Spain and the lack of credibility among Spanish referees", writes Real Madrid.
Real Madrid is now demanding that RFEF makes public the VAR room's discussions, both internally and with the head referee, related to the two incidents in the match against Espanyol.
"What happened in the match exceeds the margin for human errors and referee interpretations", writes the club.
The chairman of the Spanish league, Javier Tebas, writes in a message on X that he and many want to see a change towards a more transparent refereeing system. However, he also points out that Real Madrid, when the issue was debated and voted on in the spring of 2023, was against a change.
