There were small movements on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. The broad OMXS index fluctuated around zero and closed at minus 0.1 percent.

On the OMXS30 list of the most traded shares, measurement technology company Hexagon rose 2 percent, mining company Boliden 1.8 percent, and industrial giant 1.5 percent.

At the other end, real estate company SBB fell 2.1 percent, pharmaceutical company Astra Zeneca, which dropped 1.4 percent, and clothing chain H&M, which retreated 1.2 percent.

On leading European stock exchanges, there were generally more cheerful faces, and at the close in Stockholm, there were gains in both Frankfurt, London, and Paris.

During the first trading day of the week in Asia, all major stock exchanges pointed upwards during night trading.

USA's incoming president Donald Trump and China's leader Xi Jinping spoke on the phone on Friday, which has given some hope that the tensions between the countries may ease somewhat. Trump called the conversation "very good for both China and the USA".

On Monday, Trump will be sworn in as the 45th president of the USA.

On Wall Street in New York, the stock market week begins with a holiday due to Martin Luther King Jr Day.
