Qatar closed its airspace earlier on Monday. The action was taken due to the development in the region.

On Monday evening, explosions were heard in central Doha and Lusail, north of the capital. Projectiles could be seen moving across the sky.

State-run Iranian media confirmed that an attack on a US base in Qatar had been carried out.

According to Iran, as many missiles were fired at Qatar as the number of bombs the US used against Iran's nuclear facilities.

"Weak response"

On Monday evening, Swedish time, Donald Trump commented on the attack on Truth Social.

He calls Iran's attack "a very weak response" to the US bombings of Iranian nuclear power plants. According to Trump, 14 missiles were fired, 13 of which were neutralized and the last one was left without action because it had a "harmless direction”.

"I want to thank Iran for giving us an early warning, which meant that no lives were lost and no one was injured”.

Trump writes further that he hopes Iran can continue towards peace in the region and that he will "encourage Israel to do the same" with emphasis.

Shot down

Iran also stated earlier that missiles would be fired at a US base in Iraq, but there is no further information about it.

Qatar's Ministry of Defense says that the missiles aimed at the base in the country have been shot down. The attack has not claimed any lives, according to the department.

High-ranking Iranian officials gave Qatar a warning about the impending attack, according to a source to CNN. This was done partly to limit the damage, partly to give Iran a possible way out of the conflict with the US.

"Credible threat"

Earlier in the day, several media outlets reported that there was a "credible threat" to the US-led airbase Coalition Air Operations Centre al-Udeid in Qatar. US authorities' sources told Wall Street Journal that Iran had begun positioning launchers for a potential missile attack on US forces.

The airbase is located outside the capital Doha and is one of the headquarters for the US operational leadership for the Middle East and parts of Asia. Between 8,000 and 10,000 soldiers are stationed there.

The US Embassy urged Americans who are in Qatar to stay indoors on Monday afternoon.
