Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accuses the mediating country Qatar of "playing for both sides" in the attempts to reach a new agreement on ceasefire in Gaza – and claims himself that Israel stands for "civilisation". Qatar's Foreign Ministry believes that the comments are "inflammatory".

In a post on X, he claims that Israel is waging a justified war against Hamas.

"The time has come for Qatar to stop playing both sides with its double talk, and decide whether they stand on the side or the Hamas barbarians' side", Netanyahu writes on X.

Qatar, which together with Egypt and the USA is trying to mediate a ceasefire, now strongly rejects them – which the country's foreign ministry labels "inflammatory".

"To portray the ongoing aggression against Gaza as a defense of 'civilization' reflects the rhetoric of regimes that have used false narratives throughout history to justify crimes against innocent civilians", writes the Qatari foreign ministry's spokesperson Majed al-Ansari on X.

Qatar, Egypt, and the USA mediated a ceasefire that came into effect on January 19. The initial phase of the ceasefire ended in early March, when the warring parties could not agree on the next step.

Israel resumed fighting in Gaza on March 18 after stopping aid deliveries to the area since the beginning of March.

"A legitimate question must be asked: Was the release of no fewer than 138 hostages a result of so-called 'justified' military operations, or of just the mediation that is now unfairly criticized and undermined?" writes al-Ansari.
