According to Gisslén, there is a lack of deeper medical competence in the leadership of the Public Health Agency. He also questioned the agency's ability to handle a pandemic in the future.
The Public Health Agency is now planning to reorganize two existing departments into three smaller ones. The new department will gather the work on infectious disease control and preparedness. A manager who is a doctor and has a relevant background for the job will be recruited to the department.
"With the recruitment, the collective infectious disease control competence in the management team is also strengthened", the agency writes on its website.
"This is a step in our development work. The organizational change makes us even better equipped to handle health threats and future pandemics", says Director-General Olivia Wigzell in a comment on the website.
"The organizational change also aims at more efficient work to promote mental health and prevent suicide. Issues regarding lifestyle and environment and health will also have a clearer placement in the organization", she continues.
A decision on the change has not yet been made and negotiations with the unions are still ongoing.
No date has been set for when the new organization will be in place, but the agency states that it will happen in the near future.
