Sweden's EU contribution risks increasing by 60 percent if pending budget proposals are passed, warns EU Minister Jessica Rosencrantz (M).

Together with his colleague from Austria, Rosencrantz gathered a large part of the countries that contribute the most to the EU budget for a meeting in Brussels on Monday morning.

All with the intention of gathering strength for a smaller long-term budget for the years 2028-2035 than what the European Commission proposed this summer.

For Sweden, this means at least a 60 percent increase in the fee. That is not realistic. We have major priorities and spending needs at home. Then you cannot allow the EU budget to expand at the same time, says Rosencrantz afterwards.

In December, EU heads of state and government will try to agree on what they want to prioritize in the EU budget. However, new figures on the size of the budget will take some time to come out. The Commission's starting bid this summer is EUR 1,763 billion, equivalent to 1.26 percent of the EU's total gross national income, GNI.
