According to the prosecutors in New York, the sentence was motivated since the crimes, according to them, can be seen as a "mockery" of the USA's electoral system.
"From creating a completely fictional biography to his ruthless theft of money from elderly and disabled donors, Santos' unbridled greed and insatiable appetite for fame led him to exploit the electoral system itself", the prosecutor's office writes in a document submitted to the court.
His claims of remorse after pleading guilty "ring hollow", according to the prosecutors.
George Santos' lawyers argue for a two-year prison sentence instead. They call the prosecutors' request "absurd and unfounded" and write to the court that it "appears intended to strike down a man who has already taken full responsibility for his actions".
The controversial Republican Santos was expelled from the US House of Representatives in December 2023 after an investigation found "overwhelming evidence" of lies and financial deceit. Among other things, he received unemployment benefits despite working, and also pocketed campaign contributions.
It was the first time in 20 years, and only the sixth time in American history, that a member of the House of Representatives was kicked out of the chamber.
The sentence will be announced by a judge on April 25.
