Turkish prosecutors are seeking a 2,000-year prison sentence for opposition leader Ekrem Imamoglu, Reuters reports.

The indictment includes fraud and targets Imamoglu, who is the mayor of Istanbul but is currently in prison, and around 400 other people.

Prosecutors claim the fraud lasted for a decade and involved around 160 billion Turkish lira, equivalent to around 35 billion Swedish kronor. They are now demanding a prison sentence of over 2,000 years.

The opposition, several Western countries and a number of human rights organizations dismiss the indictment as entirely politically motivated and a way to eliminate a challenger to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The government in Ankara denies this and claims to have no influence over the judiciary.

In late October, another indictment against Imamoglu was dismissed by an Ankara court. That indictment concerned alleged vote-buying during the opposition CHP party's 2023 congress.
