The Association – where clubs from Allsvenskan and Superettan are included – notes that the current match schedule is too tight.

"Due to the increasingly compact international match calendar, we need to extend the season to fit in all national matches," says league manager Ola Rydén in a press release.

The idea is to play Allsvenskan 2026 until the end of November, a few weeks longer than usual in recent years.

At the same time, Superettan will conclude with a playoff between teams three and four. They will compete in a double meeting for a spot in the Allsvenskan qualifying match against team 14 in the top division.

After discussions with the clubs in Allsvenskan and Superettan and the analysis conducted together with the Swedish Football Association, Sef has landed on this proposal. It will be presented for decision at the Representative Meeting in November 2025.

"The fact that Uefa and Fifa have adjusted their formats means that we need to make this change to create an opportunity to plan in all national matches in Allsvenskan and the Swedish Cup. We are also taking the opportunity to introduce a playoff in Superettan to create a chance for the fourth-placed team to reach Allsvenskan," says Svante Samuelsson, sports manager at Sef.
