It will be easier for employees to find out how much their colleagues in equivalent jobs are paid. The aim is to address unjustified pay differences, primarily between men and women.

The proposal from the government and Minister for Gender Equality Nina Larsson (L) is now being submitted to the Legislative Council for review. It is based on an EU directive on pay transparency.

"We are taking steps to eliminate the pay gap between men and women," Nina Larsson said at a press conference.

The gender pay gap was just over ten percent in 2024, of which almost half (4.6 percentage points) could not be explained.

Under the proposals, employers must tell potential employees the starting salary for a job. Employees should, upon request, have the right to know the average salary of other employees who perform equivalent work.

Employers with more than 250 employees must submit an annual salary report to the Discrimination Ombudsman (DO).

The rules are proposed to take effect on July 1 this year.
