"In Large Cap (the largest companies on the stock exchange), the proportion of women is now 43 percent, which is the highest level noted since PwC began its review in 2016, when the proportion was 36 percent," writes the auditing firm PwC in its annual review.
Among all companies on the stock exchange, the distribution is more uneven: 37 percent are women.
The chairmanship role continues to be held by a clear majority of men. Around one in ten chairs is held by a woman.
"When a woman is the chair, gender equality in the boardroom tends to be higher, which is an important insight for nomination committees and owners," says Anna Gustring Boman, who is responsible for the report.
