Swedish students should be able to take advanced music education as early as primary school, believes the government, which is appointing an inquiry. It is important for the competence supply of Swedish musicians over time, says Minister of Culture Parisa Liljestrand (M) to TT.

There are already primary schools with a music profile, but the investigation will look at whether advanced education that can deviate from the regular schedule and have more music hours on the schedule can be introduced, reports Sveriges Radio Kulturnytt .

It is important that young musical talents are given the opportunity to develop early, believes Minister of Education Simona Mohamsson (L), who emphasizes that Sweden has long produced successful artists who have made themselves known around the world.

But several reports show that we are starting to fall behind, she tells Kulturnytt.

Abroad

According to Parisa Liljestrand, Swedish musicians choose to study abroad.

Even at primary school level?

"Yes, exactly, the entire educational chain plays a role, it requires an enormous number of hours, they usually say 10,000 hours to be able to handle your instrument well. There, Swedish primary schools must also be able to measure up to the competition and talent that exists abroad," she says.

Halved

The state development grant to the cultural school was halved in 2023 and is now 100 million kronor. Isn't it important to also invest in the breadth and make greater investments in the municipal cultural schools and in music education in primary school?

I would say that they are directly communicating vessels, meaning we have to have breadth to be able to offer cutting edge. But cutting edge also breeds breadth, says Liljestrand.

She refers to ongoing trials with digital teaching in smaller municipalities that do not have such a large selection.

We are now evaluating this and see that it actually gives very good results.

The President of the Court of Appeal, Mattias Almqvist, is tasked with deciding which grades the education should be offered in. Likewise, whether it becomes necessary to make exceptions to lesson plans and teaching times.

The investigator should also propose how the students should be admitted and what requirements should be placed on the school's managers.

The investigation is due to be completed on May 12, 2026.
