Several marble statues from the Roman era have been stolen from the national museum in the Syrian capital Damascus, officials confirm.

The ancient treasures were in the museum's classical section and were stolen overnight Monday, according to officials at the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums. On Monday morning, the door to the section was found broken open and six marble statues were missing.

The museum is temporarily closed to investigate the incident.

The National Museum in Damascus houses the country's largest collection of ancient artifacts. In recent years, as Syria has been ravaged by civil war, security at the museum has been tightened, including the installation of metal detectors and surveillance cameras.
