The hopes are that the new prime minister will be able to do something about the political deadlock that has paralyzed France since the far right advanced and won more seats in the national assembly in the election last year.
The former prime minister Sébastien Lecornu threw in the towel on Monday after not even a month in office, without having managed to form a government or get a budget through for the country.
Macron is now pressed to appoint a prime minister that the national assembly can vote through and has appealed to the parliament to take advantage of "this opportunity of collective responsibility".
