Postnord - which is 60 percent owned by the Swedish state - has previously asked for the requirement to deliver every other day to be abolished. Now the government agrees and is proposing a change from two days to three. The proportion of letters that must arrive on time will also be reduced from 95 to 85 percent.

"The vast majority understand that it is not possible to maintain as frequent mail delivery as we were used to before," said Minister of Civil Service Erik Slottner (KD) to DI.

The decision is expected to come into effect on June 16. According to Slottner, most people "won't really notice any change."

Since the 2000s, letter volumes have decreased by 70 percent, and by 2030 the decline is expected to be 90 percent.
