Portugal's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa announces new elections on May 18. This happens after Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and his minority government were voted out.
It was on Tuesday that oppositional Socialists and a far-right party voted out Montenegro's center-right government in a confidence vote. The allegations concern, among other things, suspicions of a conflict of interest regarding a law firm with ties to the Prime Minister.
The government has been led by the Social Democrats. The governing parties had only 80 of the parliament's 230 seats.
Thus, Portugal is forced to hold a third parliamentary election in as many years.
