Pope Leo XIV Votes in US Midterm Elections, First Sitting Pope to Cast a Ballot

Pope Leo XIV has voted in the US midterm elections, becoming the first sitting pope to vote in a political election.

Leo, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago and eligible to vote in the US state of Illinois, has, according to the Vatican, “exercised his right to vote as an American citizen”. He voted by post because he “believes in the right and duty of all citizens to participate in democratic processes”.

According to the AFP news agency, this is the first time a sitting pope has voted in a political election.

During his time as head of the Catholic Church, Leo has criticised President Donald Trump’s immigration and foreign policies. Trump has called him “terrible”, while Vice President JD Vance - who is Catholic - has urged him to be “cautious” when speaking about theology.
