Polls in Iceland's referendum on EU membership negotiations have closed.

Since there are no exit polls and the vote count only began when polling stations closed, it may take several hours before it becomes clear whether there will be a yes or no vote from the public.

The referendum is only advisory, and Icelanders are not voting directly on EU membership, but on whether the country should resume the accession negotiations that were put on hold in 2013.
