Robert Golob has led a center-left coalition. His Freedom Movement party has 29.9 percent, while Janša's conservative SDS has 27.5 percent, according to the exit poll.
The parties have been evenly matched in recent opinion polls.
Preliminary results are expected to come from the election authority on Sunday evening.
Slovenia has around 1.7 million eligible voters.
