Polish President Nawrocki Visits Constitutional Court After Protests and Fence Breach

Polish President Karol Nawrocki arrived at the country’s Constitutional Court in Warsaw on Saturday night after tumultuous scenes at the building on Friday night.

A large crowd of protesters gathered outside the building after the suspension of Constitutional Court President Bogdan Swieczkowski. During the protests, the court’s fence was breached.

The scenes prompted Karol Nawrocki to interrupt his trip to Senegal mid-flight and return to the Polish capital.

After police secured the court earlier in the evening, Nawrocki went there together with Supreme Court President Zbigniew Kapinski.

The background is that Poland’s highest legal institutions, including the Constitutional Court, have become a battleground between the current pro-European government and the largest opposition party, the national-conservative Law and Justice (PiS).

PiS has been accused of taking control of judicial institutions. When current Prime Minister Donald Tusk came to power in 2023, he promised to restore the independence of the judiciary. However, the government’s initiatives have been blocked by two successive presidents close to PiS, including Nawrocki.
