Roads may become completely impassable, telephone networks may be knocked out, and rescue operations may take a long time in connection with the New Year's Day snowstorm, the police warn.

A red warning for extremely heavy snowfall has been issued in parts of Gävleborg on New Year's Day. Orange and yellow warnings have also been issued for larger areas, from Sundsvall in the north to Örebro in the south.

The police are urging people to stay home unless it is absolutely necessary to go out into traffic because of the storm.

"The risk of becoming stranded is very high. Rescue operations can take a very long time to reach, especially on smaller roads where fallen trees can be hidden under the snow," the police say on their website.

"Prepare for longer and extensive power outages and disruptions in telecommunications networks if you live in an area with overhead lines. Do not go near downed power lines," the police add.

Severe delays and cancellations in public transport are also likely.
