The crime was committed by two men, aged 50 and 24. The police have been able to rule out additional perpetrators.
"We are not looking for any more perpetrators," said Mal Lanyon, New South Wales police chief, at a press conference on Monday morning local time.
The 50-year-old man was killed at the scene. The son, 24 years old, is seriously injured and is being treated in hospital under police guard.
The 50-year-old had had a weapons license for ten years and owned six weapons. These are the weapons believed to have been used in the crime.
During a search of a residence, police also found two homemade bombs, which had not been activated.
The attack is being investigated as a terrorist act and police will increase their presence at Jewish sites. However, the police do not want to comment further on the perpetrators' motives at this time, Lanyon says.
