The activists carried out the action shortly after the Vasa Museum opened at 10 am.
We received an alarm at 10:17 that there were two people inside the museum who had climbed up into the Vasa ship itself. They had brought a message, says police spokesperson Anna Westberg.
It appears to be a banner that was put up. The protest, carried out by the organization "Restore Wetlands", is directed against the Finnish company Neova extracting peat in Sweden.
The museum staff are investigating whether anything has been damaged on the ship. So far, no damage has been seen, says Anna Westberg.
According to the police, they climbed over a fence and up a mast. Security guards intervened and the police have taken the activists, two men, in for questioning.
Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand (The Moderate Party) reacts with dismay to the incident.
"I am frankly outraged by people who take it upon themselves to exercise activism at the expense of our shared cultural heritage", she writes on Instagram.
The crime classification is currently trespassing.
