Italian police have fired tear gas and water cannon at demonstrators during protests against the Olympics in Milan.

Police and protesters clashed on at least two occasions in the city on Saturday evening, several media outlets reported.

On one occasion, about a dozen masked protesters moved towards the newly built hockey arena. Police repelled them with tear gas and water cannons while the protesters set off fireworks and smoke bombs, according to local media.

The clashes occurred after 10,000 people, including many families with children, marched in a peaceful demonstration against the Olympics. The dissatisfaction is directed, among other things, at the possible presence of the US immigration enforcement agency ICE during the games and the negative impact of the Olympics on the climate and sensitive alpine environments.
